Getting your home organised may seem like a mammoth task. We look around ourselves at the possessions that have accumulated after many years of living our lives and we don’t know where to start in order to make our homes more comfortable, useful and beautiful.
Here are some tips on how to organise your home so you can enjoy your time there more.
Learn To Declutter
First of all, it’s time to declutter. This may sound easy but the truth is that it’s harder than you may think.
There are a lot of emotions and memories attached to certain objects and although some people might not have a hard time donating things or throwing them out, others may feel guilty or worried about tossing things that were gifted to them years ago, even if they no longer use them.
But would you really care if someone donated something that you gave to them years ago? Absolutely not. So free yourself of that guilt and before you give objects away or throw them in the trash, thank them for what they’ve done for you.
You don’t have to keep things forever to keep the memories that go alongside them. Make sure that you declutter by category, not by room – otherwise you’ll end up shifting all that junk around between spaces!.
Figure Out Those Collections
A lot of us collect things, from trading cards to stuffed toys to Marvel memorabilia to signed books.
As life goes on, it’s important to keep reconsidering your collections – do they mean the same to you as they always did? Do you still add to them? How much space do they take up in your life and your mind, and could that space be better utilised elsewhere?
Collections take up time, money and space in your home, so it’s good to restrict that space carefully to make sure they don’t encroach too much on your life.
Get a cabinet for those figures, hire some car storage space for those vehicles you want to fix up, get built in shelves for your books. Don’t let your collections take over your home.
Create An Information Centre
Finally, a great idea is to create an information centre. This doesn’t have to be a huge thing, but why not set up a space in one room for all your important information?
This means that you won’t leave important pieces of paper strewn over your home, and you’ll be able to find them easily if you want them.
Buy files and folders to organise your papers into, and make sure that they’re easy to look through. You could expand this idea to create little information centres in each room so that everything has a place in your home – in your den, for example, set up a table where you keep the TV remotes and whatever other essentials you need.
Keep a basket underneath each information centre to throw clutter that you will sort through at a later date.
Making your home organised is easier than you may think – these tips will help you make and keep it beautiful.
